Regardless of how fine you make a quilt, it is quite difficult to make it intricately pretty. While a quilt offers a great amount of comfort and is one of the few bedspreads around to offer a raised kind of design it is very rare to see quilts with pretty and elegant as well as detailed designs. Granted you can achieve this effect with small enough squares or shapes but this process is a bit too painstaking for mass-produced quilts. Thankfully, that’s where matelasse fabric comes in as it offers awesome raised designs for a variety of matelasse pillow covers, bedspreads made from matelasse and even matelasse clothes. Contrary to popular belief matelasse fabric can be extremely comfortable. While it is usually made from 100% cotton, there also silk matelasse bedspreads and polyester matelasse upholstery. Unlike lace, matelasse designs do not break apart easily due to the fact that the fabric is usually quite thick and durable while the pattern does not come apart as easily as lace does. Thanks to this durability, matelasse fabric feels better and more comfortable after every wash. In addition to this comfort it also feels padded despite the fact that there isn’t any padding at all, making it ideal as a cushion covers or as bedspreads. Therefore it is also quite rare to find bedspreads made from matelasse inside a simple setting like a teen or child’s room. What most people don’t realize is that there are matelasse fabric designs that are quite simple as well but may take a little looking to find. Going with a simple square or geometric shape motif and a simple flower design fits great with these sorts of settings. However, if you like to do things on your own or a just looking for the personal touch this is also easy to do. Just like quilting, matelasse enthusiasts can make their own matelasse fabrics and designs as well. Traditionally, matelasse designs were hand stitched to the fabric of choice but these days it is produced using a jacquard loom. All one really needs is basic quilting skills, so if you’ve done a quilt before, going the other way with bedspreads made from matelasse, cushion covers or drapes is a great choice. While we still have not seen any matelasse designs for game characters just yet (although we’ve seen quite a few for quilts!) its just a matter of time before gaming quilting enthusiasts come out with their own awesome game-inspired matelasse creations as well.
